Mamlambo Fossils
Новая Зеландия
Добавлен 23 фев 2019
I'm an amateur fossil hunter living on the South Island of New Zealand. I enjoy hunting the coastal cliffs for Miocene and Cretaceous era fossils and venturing further afield for the petrified wood and fossils that can be found there. I'm constantly learning about the fossils that can be found here in New Zealand.
I also use a variety of tools and techniques to prepare the fossils I find which I then donate to New Zealand museums.
I love hearing from other fossils hunters, so please get in touch and leave a comment.
You can support me by joining my Patreon channel which has tons of bonus content, hopefully I will be able to do this fulltime one day with enough support: patreon.com/mamlambo

Fossil crab - removing ALL the rock [~12 million years old]
I used this footage in a previous video but I was never happy with the way it turned out. Here is the footage with more stabilisation and editing.
From memory, I think this prep took around 20 hours, the separation on the fossil was really good

When they had worked on this road, a bunch of the overburden had been pushed over on to the side of the hill which is where I found this mystery piece of Cretaceous material. I thought I would show my process of figuring out what it is. If I hadn't done an investigation first before cutting into it, I could have destroyed an important fossils. Out There Learning: ruclips.net/user/OutThereLearning I head out to a Cretaceous area in New Zealand to look for fossils, hopefully, there is a dinosaur bone out there waiting for me! The weather was great and the seals were not too unfriendly which made for an awesome day of fossil hunting. I had some really good finds, including a rock I will need to investigate further to see if I can figure...
Fossil prepping disaster
Просмотров 13 тыс.Месяц назад
I thought this would be a quick little prep of a Trichopeltarion greggi crab as the rock was thin and there was good separation between the rock and crab. Boy, was I wrong! It turned into such a disaster, there were cracks in it and the pyrite had turned some sections into a disaster!

note for first time visitors to NZ, the giant salmon in Rakaia 00:19 is not a real salmon.
Pretty cool, i was wondering how many hours does it take from start to finish?
How exactly are you sure it is 4 million years old though?
Oh look. A white male oppressing you.
Cool.
His eyes are that blue because he’s achieved vision 2.0
Pulling a bird from thin air isn't magic. Making an accurate model of a creature fossilized in rock without seeing it is 🎩
Impressive!
Awesome
A really old penwing
Esto es maravilloso 😎👌🏽😍
Congratulations! 👏🎉
I wish I was there! That looks like a blast! Great job!
4 millioooon years old ? No way it’s actually 4 trillion years old
This is amazing! Does the scribe damage the fossil if you aren't careful? I presume so.
Yip, it's a tungsten carbide stylus so it will mess it up!
Bro it’s only 22° outside and you’re in shorts saying it’s a nice day lol! 22 is cold Af!!!😂
I probably meant celsius 😁
@@MamlamboFossils omg I’m so sorry bro🤣! I was like this guy in shorts at the beach in below freezing temps is some kinda crazy Viking or something !!!! Thankyou sir for the clarification
Wow amazing!!!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow! That was an incredible prep! I can see why you said it's too delicate! But wow, it's fabulous! Thanks Morne!
Thanks so much Lisa!
I know it's probably impossible, but ever had any luck exposing the mouth parts at all? I'm assuming any effort to scribe around that area would just break all the fragile parts off....Maybe you would have to manually chip each little bit of rock off...but even then probably too fragile. I would love to see the preserved mouth parts.
Oh, and as always, great Video. :)
I haven't tried to yet, I might try it on the next crab 😁
What guides your decision about how much rock to remove? I mean we can see that there is a core of rock replacing internal structures in this final result keeping it mostly together. But what guides you to fully reveal the exterior structures, replacing the rock with glue where needed etc? You mention it's more fragile so I'm guessing theres just a preservation need to keep the fossil largly encased unless science calls for more excavation.
I prefer removing rock on the one side of a crab while keeping enough as a bit of a "frame" to show where it came from. If it's a prep for a scientific paper I am trying to expose key elements of the fossil.
It Must have been nice, being a crab “Millions” of Years Ago… 😅 It’s almost as if Evolution Theory is a Lie…
Great Living Fossil, Man. 👍 Keep up the great Work.
Finally a fossil that isn't broken into two halves 🥹
Why haven’t you got that out on display 🤔
it is on display!
Amazg Crab
Amazg Fossile Crab
Isnt it amazing to think that no living thing laid eyes on that crab for 12 million years? xD Mamlambo, find out a way to un-mineralize it.
That would be so amazing!!
Wow, that crab is amazing! There's a lot of strategic work there!😊
Thanks so much!
Release him unto the world
😱🤯😵 twelve millions years - I can't get a grasp of it. By the way, awesome, great skills, dedication, great video production. Long time subscriber, always enjoys it. Just an advice you could implement : Adding some text presenting the maximum of information on the fossil, the animal, the era, the fossilization process, composition/weight of the fossil, etc. KUTGW! ❤😀👍
Thanks! That's great feedback! I'll try and incorporate it.
@@MamlamboFossils Very kind of you taking time to answer, and great of you to take advice into account. Stay positive and reactive! Peace, Live long & Prosper (12 million years hopefully?) ❤🧙♂🖖 Actually, geologists & you are an ace in my sleeve into my fight against ignorance/anti-science religious {antiEvolutionist/Creationist ...} . Thanks for your Service in the Science Army!
I airways want to know how long was the actual prep? Was that 10 minutes? An hour? 8 hours?
Amazing find and prep on that crab, fun to watch the time lapse and reveal. The leg that keeps breaking off, would it be possible to take a small diameter bit and drill a small hole in the center of each bit and place a dowel of some sort to secure it in place.
that would work! I'm going to try a thicker superglue first :)
Awesome stuff - also, 1.5k downvotes? - What's wrong with people - That's bizarre behavior. Keep up the good work.
Some people don't like fossils maybe?!
How can I tell if something is a fossil and not a rock? it looks like bone but it could very well just be a rock 😅 (asking for advice for a amateur fossil hunter being me)
It should have a bit of bone texture showing, that's what I look for anyway
@@MamlamboFossils what does bone texture look like?
I always love to watch these videos, the crab fossils almost always turn out incredible! Well done! 😮
Thank you so much Linus! 😀
WOW !!! That's incredible !
Who would have ever thought that would be rescued from that rock!?! Amazing!
Thanks!!
Plot twist. Crab wakes up, yawns then walks away!! Hats off to your level of skill and patients
Why do you only wear one glove when using an air scribe?
Only the hand holding the air scribe needs protection from the vibrations
You always amaze me. What a beautiful crab.
Thank you very much!
You truly have one of the best channels on RUclips! 👍🏻❤️
Thank you so much 😀
You rock
That’s amazingly delicate work! It’s really interesting to see the bones in the larger-claw (I’d never before realized that Crustaceans DO have bones; had assumed that everything was made of cartilidge!) - they look so much like the bones that make-up Our hands. 😄
They don't have bones but they do have different segments!
That critter looks like it could just give itself a bit of a twitch and then scuttle off into the corner of your workshop! Where were the eyes located on this species?
I'm not too sure! Perhaps quite low down near where the claws are touching the carapace.
It does seem like one of the most complete crab preps you've done... always addictive to watch! Cheers!
Glad you like this one!
Someone forgot the KFC leftovers
Nobody will ever convince me that this person didnt just carve a stone into some deformed fossil. "Oh look, a 19 trillion year old bear fossilized in this tree!" *reves chainsaw
👍🇺🇸
Should put it in some clear epoxy so it can't break an you can still see it
I stay away from epoxy as it goes cloudy with age
Did not know that thanks
Amazing work! Always brings me happiness when I see fossils like this so well preserved and presented.
Thank you very much!
Great work
Thank you so much 😀
It must've been nice, being a crab millions of years ago. All you had to worry about was predators and the availability of prey...
